NEW DELHI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- At least six people died and over 40,000 were evacuated from flood-hit areas of India's southern state of Karnataka, an official statement said on Thursday.
Several districts of Karnataka, including Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Raichur, Yadgiri got affected. Belagavi is the worst affected district where six people lost their lives.
According to the statement, "Release of waters from reservoirs are well-coordinated and as per protocol to prevent inundation of downstream areas. The level of water in the reservoirs is adjusted to prevent inundation of downstream areas. The villages likely to be affected due to heavy discharge have been identified and necessary precaution is taken."
Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa visited the areas of Belagavi and monitored the relief and rescue operations.
"Visited places affected by floods in Belagavi. Met with the people in these regions to address their concerns and have directed officials to do the needful immediately," Yediyurappa tweeted on Thursday.
A joint rescue team comprising fire and emergency department, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Army have evacuated 40,690 people, the statement said.
District administrations are also on high alert and are prepared to tackle any emergency arising out of heavy discharge from reservoirs.
